The Symbol

The harp has been Ireland's official emblem for centuries — older than the flag, older than the state itself.

It traces back to the Gaelic tradition of the bard, and it's the only national symbol in the world modelled on an instrument rather than an animal or a crest. It appears on Irish coinage and government seals to this day. Not because it's decorative — because nothing else has fit as well.
